PAGE 3: Current Issues Facing RI Students
Q5: Think for a moment about your district. What makes your district great? What makes you most proud?
Our Administration is well qualified. Our children are well equipped and eager to learn. We have a majority of good teachers. Our School Committee is focussed on education but consider the cost also.
Q6: What are the most important challenges you see in your district as we enter in to the 2015/2016 school year?
We have a need for a building program to house our emotionally dysfunctional children. The building was turned down once but the need is still there and we have an enthusiastic committee looking into our options.
PAGE 4: Requiring PARCC Testing
Q7: Does your district have a policy that requires students to participate in state wide testing (like PARCC)?
Other (please specify) We do have a policy but I was not on the SC at the time.
Q8: While there is not a state mandate to require students to participate in state assessments like PARCC, some districts have passed local policies that would require participation in the state assessments. If your district were to propose a policy to require participation in state assessments, would you vote in favor of that policy?
No, I would not vote in favor of a policy requiring students to participate in state assessments.
Q9: If you have other comments on PARCC or other testing policies, please share them here.
Required testing leads to “teaching to the test” rather than teaching for education. Some students have problems being tested although they do very well on regular education requirements. This leads to invalid test results.
PAGE 5: Final Thoughts
Q10: Thank you for participating in our first School Committee Survey. If you have any thing you would like ParentsAcrossRI.org to know, you can share those comments here or email us at [email protected].
Good Administrators should be rewarded by parents’ compliments. School Committees should be respectful, interested in the students and teaching results. Negative SC’s make the job of teaching tougher than it needs to be. Also, it s. should be easier to release teachers who do not relate to students and have little interest in the results of their teaching. They do exist. I worked as a teacher’s assistant for 8 years and as the secretary/bookkeeper for the Superintendent for 8 years. I know poor teachers exist but get protected by unions. This is costly for students.
